The
mission of the Ohio County Evidence Recovery Team is to support the
Ohio County Sheriff’s Office with a tactical response to crime scenes.
When a major incident occurs, the Ohio County Evidence Recovery
Team will be activated. Major
incidents consist of, but are not limited to:
1.
Murder: The crime of killing another
2.
Suspicious Deaths: Incidents
involving a death from other than natural causes.
3.
Serious Crimes with Complex Scenes: Felony
crimes with scenes that are of a nature that requires advanced
training or specialized equipment to process.
4.
Fatal
Vehicle Crashes: Vehicle
crashes that cause the death of one or more persons.
The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office
Evidence Recovery Team is comprised of eight members.
The members of the Evidence Recovery Team are issued equipment
that is carried in their patrol cars.
This equipment allows individual members to apply forensic
collection techniques to crime scenes above the capabilities of the
patrol deputies. The
individual members are equipped to document scenes with digital
photography and can collect and properly package fragile items such as
DNA evidence.
The team was formed to provide a
systematic approach to major crime scene investigations in order to
obtain as much information as possible from a scene which will assist
in achieving the goals of identification and prosecution of
responsible individuals as well as protect the innocent.
All team members are
required to complete the evidence collection training program at the Sirchie
Fingerprint Lab in
Youngsville
,
N.C.
In addition to this
program, team members attend various other training programs to
further develop their skills.
The
team meets on a monthly basis to train.
These monthly trainings allow the members to train as a team,
practice collection techniques, and conduct experiments to further
develop new skills.
