What is the starting salary for your department?

The starting salary for the Ohio County Sheriff's Office is $30,469 and $31,469 after 1 year probation.

How much vacation/sick time is given each year?

Probationary officers receive 1 1/4 vacation days per month.
1 1/2 sick days are earned each month.
Officers also receive a number of leave days per year. This is based on the number of County Holidays in a calendar year, usually 13-15.

Does your department have health insurance?

Employees of the Ohio County Commission receive full medical insurance through the "Health Plan of the Upper Ohio Valley". Eye and dental insurance are also provided by the County Commission at no cost to the Deputy.

What is the minimum age for a Deputy Sheriff?

Applications are accepted from persons 18 to 45 years of age. There is a mandatory retirement at the age of 65.

Is my Law Enforcement certification from another state good in WV?

This is subject to approval by the Department of Criminal Justice Service. §149-2-14, Equivalent Certification lists the requirements. If you meet the requirements, you may not have to attend our Academy.

If you are a Certified West Virginia Law Enforcement Officer, you will receive an additional 5 points on your test sore. However, you must provide us a copy of your state certification.

What training or schooling do I need to have?

As with anything, the more training you have the better. We do not require any training or college degrees. We only require a High School Diploma or equivalent. After being hired, you will be sent to the West Virginia State Police Academy to complete the Basic Officer Training Program. This consists of 600 classroom hours, as well as Firearms training, Defensive driving, and other related subjects. The academy is approximately 15 weeks long, depending on holidays. You will be required to stay on Academy grounds during the week, and return home for the weekend. All travel, personal, and schooling expenses are paid for by the department.

Do I have to live in WV to take the test?

No.

WV State Code requires all Law Enforcement Officers be residents of WV, but you will not need to live in West Virginia until after you have been hired.

Is the fitness test given the same day as the written test?

No.

There will be a physical / agility test given to all applicants who pass the written test. If you pass the written test, you will be notified of the physical / agility test. In addition, after being hired, the Department will request a training slot at the Academy. Another fitness test is given by the West Virginia State Police Academy before you can attend training. Click here for physical fitness requirements.

Do I receive extra test points for my Military Service?

Yes.

If you have been active Military or Reserve with an Honorable discharge, you will receive 5 points. However, you must bring a copy of your DD214 to the test.

Does your Department have take home cruisers?

Yes.

Our administration is in the end stages of supplying all Deputies with a take home cruiser. Every certified Deputy who has completed probation, has been assigned a cruiser.
